Central Point’s 5th annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr., will be from 7-8:30pm on Thursday, January 11th. King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. There are many ideas in the US on what exactly has been achieved since his assassination April 4, 1968, in Memphis, TN. The students on the MLK celebration planning committee chose this year’s focus to shine light on what is happening in their world today and how they want to move forward from this point by speaking their truth.
The event is free, but those attending are asked to bring a nonperishable food item for donation to the Maslow Project
Keynote speakers Dr. Alma Rosa Alvarez is a professor of English at Southern Oregon University where she teaches U.S. Ethnic Literature. She is one of the co-founders of the Racial Equity Coalition. She has also been on the Life, Justice and Peace Commission for the Archdiocese of Portland. In her spare time, she likes to write poetry.
Marjorie Trueblood-Gamble is the Director of Diversity and Inclusion and Title IX Coordinator at Southern Oregon University. Through these roles she works to foster a safe, equitable and inclusive campus for students, staff, and faculty. She considers herself a Diversity Nerd rather than expert and strives to bring about positive sustainable change. She received her B.A. in Psychology from Earlham College, and her M.A. in Executive Development for Nonprofit Management from Ball State University in Indiana. She is currently working on a doctorate in Educational Leadership for change. Marjorie serves on several committees and groups including: SO Health-E, The Attorney General's Sexual Assault Task Force, The African American Student Success Plan, and is one of the Co-Founders of the Racial Equity Coalition. Through her work with the Sexual Assault Task Force she has testified before the legislature to better support survivors and create more equitable processes. Through the Racial Equity Coalition, she has facilitated large community conversations on race and is currently working on a project called the race toolkit. She is a wife to Jerdson Gamble and a mother to a wonderful 10 year old son, named J.J.
Master of Ceremonies is Matthew Reynolds, teacher at the Crater Renaissance Academy of Arts and Sciences.
The event offers a tribute to King through art, music, and performance pieces by District 6 current students and alumni, Davey Kashuba-Reum, Plain Folk, percussionist Jared Brown, and others! To cap off the evening there will be a rebroadcast of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
Celebration will be held at Crater Performing Arts Center, 655 N Third St. Central Point Oregon.
